For the first time in Utah’s history, a vice presidential debate will be coming to the Beehive State. A statewide essay contest hosted by the Utah Debate Commission is underway to engage students at all levels, from kindergarten to college, in the electoral process.
The 300-word submissions should answer the question: If you could ask the vice presidential candidates one question, what would you ask and why?
As you review the annotations, notice how the feedback tracks the logical flow of the author’s arguments. The annotation comments are aimed at helping the author strengthen the power of the argument essay. This is a model for helpful annotation and feedback you can provide when you do the writing community review of your peers’ argument essays.
Instructions: Read the student essay, “Salvaging Our Old-Growth Forests.” First read the NON-ANNOTATED student essay, and then compare it to the ANNOTATED version of the same essay. Notice how the annotated comments analyze and respond to the essay.
It’s a chance to add depth to something that is important to you and tell the admissions committee more about your background or goals. Test scores only tell part of your story, and we want to know more than just how well you work. We want to see how you actually think.
The essays can be the most important components of your application.
